ABOUT THE CLASS
Geared towards intro, beginner, and intermediate levels.
All levels and all styles abilities encouraged.
Knee pads might be helpful.
Shoes allowed in the space.

In this class, Breakin’ basics will be utilized to cultivate personal creativity and freestyle. Kneerocks, sweeps, fundamental footwork steps and go-downs will serve as a foundation. Dancers are encouraged to source from their intuitive physical knowledge and integrate any previous movement or dance experience.
Although competitive Breakin’ is highly athletic and acrobatic in nature, Tom believes that accessibility and accommodation are embedded in the form’s traditions. Tom’s teaching is committed to Hip Hop philosophies that encourage sampling, remixing, development of personal style, and respect for lineage.

BIOs
Tom Tsai and Arthur Lien are part of Section 7, a non-competing Hip Hop and B-boy crew with members specializing in dance, music, activism, and education. The crew’s presence is rooted in Taipei and extends to New York and Los Angeles.

Tom competed for a decade in Taipei, Seattle, and LA’s local breakin’ scenes, followed by national and worldwide opportunities to teach dance and present his solo choreography. He is a chief collaborator with Dancing Through Prison Walls, a choreographic project that collaborates with people impacted by the carceral system. Tom has been part-time faculty at Pomona College, Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Long Beach, and Chapman University, teaching breakin’ and modern dance.

Arthur reps the legendary Rock So Fresh Crew out of San Diego. He is dog dad to shiba inu Hiro.
